Web Accounts: ============================================================ The Basics: We are in the business of hosting other people's web pages. We 'serve' them on our Sun Netra server on a switched 10 megabit connection to the Internet. There currently is no megabyte restriction or surcharge for popular pages. We feel that you should have an affordable connection for your pages before you need to buy your own server. Domain name registration gives you: http://www.yourdomain.com style addresses and regular accounts are http://yourname.the-future.com. Either way, PhutureNet gives you the option to look professional in any circumstance. All PhutureNet web accounts include: * Unlimited access (hits) * Unlimited size (MB) * Image Map Support * Private FTP account * Statistics package (http://www.the-future.com/stats.html) Why we're different: Most Internet Service Providers charge varying rates for web hosting services from £10 to £1,000 a month (if you don't believe us look at our comparison chart). We want to be the price/performance leader in the marketplace. When you sign up with PhutureNet you get a fast connection and a simple environment to conduct business or persue your hobbies. We keep it simple. File Transfer Protocol (FTP) ============================================================ The Basics: File Transfer Protocol's (FTP) job is to move files from one computer to another. It doesn't matter where the two computers are located, how they are connected, or even whether they use the same operating system. As long as they both speak the FTP language and have access to the Internet, you can use FTP commands to transfer files. FTP is the method you will transfer your web documents to PhutureNet's server so they appear on the web. The most often used method of accessing FTP sites is by 'Anonymous FTP'. PhutureNet assigns your web site folder a unique user name and password to protect your documents from harm. You will utilise an FTP client software listed in on our resource pages to transfer all your files (i.e. html, gif, jpg, wav, etc.) Why we're different: We give you access to your account so you can change your web content 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Your in control and don't have to rely on your Internet Service Provider to finally 'get around to it' to update your site! With PhutureNet, once you've uploaded your web page changes, they are immediately available on the Internet. Electronic Mail ============================================================ The Basics: Electronic Mail (E-mail) is a message sent from your computer account to another. The recipient can read the message on their computer and then reply to the message or forward it to another user's computer anywhere on the Internet. Why we're different: By utilising a PhutureNet e-mail account you can more directly align your address with your web pages. So instead of a generic account that your current Internet Service Provider (ISP) assigns you, you now have a far more flexible address. If your employer is your ISP (i.e. Gov., Universities, Big Companies), you can disassociate yourself from your company but still use their connection to retrieve your e-mail. You can continue to use dial-up service and run your usual mail client like Eudora, Instead of a generic account they assign you (i.e. john12@internetserviceprovider.com) you can have a more friendly address that could relate to your home page. Some uses: Some people want to set up temporary accounts for special projects on the web or certain business applications. By using any POP mail client software (i.e. Eudora) you can easily retrieve your mail anywhere on the Internet. E-mail Responder ============================================================ When you want to provide frequently asked questions to anyone who asks, you can set-up an e-mail responder and have the information automatically sent to the requester. This is great with price lists, FAQ's, newsletters, or just about anything. You simply put a mailto tag in your html page like our sample and tell your users to send any message to it, and they will get the document: Similar to how you got this message! E-mail Aliasing ============================================================ The best way to describe e-mail aliasing is to think about how unmanageable it could be to be the only person in your company. Your the postmaster, webmaster, shippingmaster, accountingmaster, salesmaster, or janitormaster, and have a single e-mail account for each. You would spend so much time just retrieving messages that no work would get done, but your image could suffer if you only had one lonely e-mail people could send mail. Aliasing could solve this problem. All these e-mail accounts could simply be aliases that all point to your original E-mail Account with PhutureNet You can have unlimited number of virtual mail accounts, but only have to retrieve your mail from one location, at one time. *Requires a standard E-mail Account with PhutureNet. Example: postmaster@yourdomain.com webmaster@yourdomain.com shippingmaster@yourdomain.com accountingmaster@yourdomain.com salesmaster@yourdomain.com janitormaster@yourdomain.com all ends up in the mail account = bob@yourdomain.com E-mail Forwarding ============================================================ E-mail forwarding is sometimes confused with e-mail aliasing. Forwarding just means that your standard e-mail account is programmed to transparently redirect all inbound mail to any mail account you specify. So if you want a professional image with your domain name like professional@yourdomain.com forwarded to your CompuServe account, without anyone knowing, that's e-mail forwarding. No mail is collected and resent, all messages just 'bounce' off the PhutureNet mail server and land wherever you want.* Requires a standard E-mail Account with PhutureNet. Domain Name Registration ============================================================ A unique domain name is the vanity license plates of the Internet. For example www.yourcompany.com is a unique domain name. Having a domain name is important for most businesses. Not only does it give you a slick professional image, it also allows you to move your web site to another server without changing your web address. It's a way to make your site standout without showing that your site is actually on someone else's server. Currently the InterNIC charges $100 to register your domain name and covers 2 years of use. Subsequent years are $50/yr. Interested to see if your domain is already taken? visit the InterNic search engine http://rs.internic.net/cgi-bin/whois CGI Programming - C, Perl ============================================================ The cgi aspect of your web site allows viewers to interact with forms, sign-up for mailing lists and any number of different things. In fact, you probably used CGI to sign-up for PhutureNet. We can custom integrate CGI programs to help your site come alive. Currently, only custom CGI Programming customers are allowed cgi programs on PhutureNet. Mail Form CGI ============================================================ The purpose of this script is take a PhutureNet customer's designed form, and pass the input to a pre-determined e-mail account. You can build any form with any information and use this script to send the information to you whenever someone presses the submit key. We place a configuration file in your PhutureNet document directory that has instructions on how to configure your form to work properly with our script. Try this sample form below. For a sample e-mail output of this form. CGI Programming - C, Perl ============================================================ PhutureNet can custom integrate CGI programs to help your site come alive. Currently, only custom CGI programming customers are allowed cgi programs on PhutureNet. If you have a cgi program already in use on another web site and would like to run it here, we have the following policy. All cgi program are to be submitted to PhutureNet programmers for review. We charge $85/hour to review the program on security and system resource criteria. We then assess the user a surcharge based on the cpu cycles the program is expected to produce in a one month period of time. This surcharge can range from $5/month to $250/month depending on the complexity and usage of the cgi. We anticipate building more scripts like the Mail Form CGI above. If there is one that you think would benefit many users, don't hesitate to suggest it.
